NSF Award on Adaptive Expertise in Design and Innovation
Thursday, December 13, 2007
A research group, including Drs. Ann McKenna (PI), Matthew Glucksberg, Robert Linsenmeier, and Uri Wilensky, has received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a research project entitled "Exploring the Role of Computational Adaptive Expertise in Design and Innovation" (June 2007-May 2010). This project seeks to advance both basic and applied understanding of how to prepare engineering graduates to effectively contribute to America's leadership in technological innovation. Engineering solutions to modern technological needs require, at their core, foundational analytic skills and facility with modern computational tools and methods. As educators/researchers we are compelled to better understand how learners can effectively bring this complex knowledge to bear in the process of innovation. Using the framework of "adaptive expertise", the research aims to provide recommendations for instructional and assessment strategies to develop competencies required for technological innovation.
