To qualify for admission, you must have a BS in engineering or in a field of quantitative science. Students without engineering degrees should have an adequate background for graduate-level mathematics and engineering courses. This means that your background should include courses in ordinary differential equations, computer programming, and basic engineering relevant to your intended area of specialization.

Admission is competitive. Our admission decision will be based on your previous academic performance, GRE scores (general exam is required; advanced engineering test is not required), at least 2 letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should indicate why you are interested in biomedical engineering and which research areas and faculty members interest you most. You should also include any relevant background and experience as well as short-term academic goals and long-term career goals.

In exceptional circumstances, the Graduate School reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to waive any documentation normally required for admission. It also reserves the right to admit or to deny an applicant admission whenever it believes that it has sufficient evidence for the decision. At the discretion of the Graduate School, supporting documents that are received more than one month after the application form may not be incorporated into the admission decision.

Applications can be considered for admission in any quarter of the year, but matriculation in the fall is recommended. Completed applications for fall quarter should be received by December 31 to receive prime consideration. Fellowship appointments are awarded only to students entering in the fall.

Students interested in a combined MD/PhD degree should apply to that program only:
